SoFI(R)A - Revistas

Mensaje por Rein »

I happened to acquire several old copies of the Revista of the period 1951-1964. Reading them - browsing through them - I noticed that there is hardly anything about the contemporary philatelic research done in Argentina! As if NOTHING happened!

I know this was quite common in those days as even in the Netherlands the articles about contemporary matters are extremely rare! So this happened in Argentina as well!

What can be extraordinary strange for a philatelist looking back now is that the excellent works of Victor Kneitschel - the 1958 double volume - do NOT get mentioned in the Revista at all! The Petrowitsch catalogue got briefly mentioned once though...

a summary of what I had bought!

Revista de la Sociedad Filatelica Argentina:

1941 316-321

1948 , 363

1950 370/371/372/373/374/375
1951 376-381
1952 382, 384, 386-387
1953 388-392,
1954 394-399
1955 400-405
1956 406/407/408, 409/410/411
1957 412/413/414/415
1958 416/417, 418/419
1959 420/421, 422/423
1960 424/425, 426/427
1961 428-429
1962 430-431
1963 432
1964 433-434
1965 435
1967 436
1969 437

So in the range 370-437 I miss only 383, 385 and 393!

After 1955 this magazine seems to have had big problems in appearing! Combined numbers, even whole years (1950, 1957) or just one number (1965 and 1967) or not at all ....

Ricardo Eliçabe was the Editor in Chief during this period. His necrology could be found in number 437....

As I said before the Revista does not contain much about contemporary stamps! Publishing some official Decrees is quite handy but so far doe snot reveal too much news.

In the 1951-1969 period ther is really only ONE article about contemporary stamps. Issued in 1951! Later on there are a few very short news clips of interest, but now first the 1951 article in the November-December issue:

Just ONE article on the P&R I series in the 1951-1969 period is not much but it contains a few aspects that need discussing! It is strange this article has not been mentioned neither by Dario BArdi nor by Guillermo Pettigiani in their most recent books!

I will go into the article itself in another thread within the P&R I subforo!

Rein,

It is quite common here (in Argentina) not to take into account the past... Every people tend to begin from zero. I am a biologist, so a scientific, and as a scientific I know that one must use the past experience! Science is a social construction, and it would be very useful to apply this to philatelia, is'nt it?

I am VERY interested in this articles!

Alejandro,

I am well-known for my heretic views as to Argentine philately ;) I was raised a scientist by my father - a botanist and a nomenclature expert - and that doesn't get me stopped .... :)

I will gradually scan articles or other things of interest and publish it here!

Classification is an exciting activity - both plants and stamps! I wish to develop a very modest dichotomic clue for pPyRI Such as I used for determination of crustacean species!

Alejandro,

you can have several approaches!

A very easy way using characteristics that even school-kids can use or a more scientific approach where you can expect the user to be familiar with somewhat more complex notions.... :)

Most wild flowers can have their names established by starting with the selection of colours - red, blue or yellow.....

Exactly! I think that (just like animals and plants) every individual is a unique one... but we cannot invent a method for classification of individuals! You must be able to take the common factor and to group by any criterion...

I have received several PyRI stamps, so I am ready to examine typo and offset, colours, watermarks, etc... It will be time to explore papers... or chemical compositions!!!

Alejandro,

I do not think we need to go as far as that! The usual instruments should do: eyes, magnifying glass, light bulbs, UV-lamp, thickness meter, etc.... And the computer scanner of course!
