P&R I 50c Oil Platform
The plate used for the unwatermark grid paper (50cNGR) has two plate varieties that I would like someone confirm. Both affect the denomination box.

Re: P&R I 50c Oil Platform
Here I show some of the 50c Wavy Rays from this selection. The design of this stamp, with a concentration of ink in the center-the oil platform-causes 'sock on the nose' postmarks to be somewhat faint.
The first paper, the 1E1. These have a limited range of shades.
The second paper, the 1E2 of 1937. These have a limited range of shades. This stamp is somewhat rare.
The third paper, the 1E3 from 1939 to 1944, has a few color varieties, but still is not nearly as common as the 25c of the same era.
The fourth paper, the 1E4 of 1940, white and thin. These are usually found in a distinctive, deep burgundy red.

Re: P&R I 50c Oil Platform
The 50c received ample use during the 1950s. I find five major types, of which three are well represented in this selection.
The 1951 paper, the 1L1, is bright white and has a medium RA. This stamp is only found with a distinctive deep orange background.
The 1L2 paper, with large to gigantic RA. This stamp is only found with a distinctive pale red frame and faint background.
The 1L3 paper, similar to the 1L1 paper. This stamp is only found with a distinctive deep yellow background.

1E3, from 1939 to 1944
1E4, from 1940
1E5, from 1943/44, rare, small RA
NGR, from 1945
NOP, unwatermarked opaque from 1947/48
2C, Straight Rays from 1949
CL2, clay from 1952
1L1, from 1951, deep orange background
1L2, from 1952, pale red, medium to gigantic RA, poorly defined
1L3, from 1955/56, bright white paper and deep yellow background
1L4, similar to 1L2, with a partially visible watermark
1L5, similar to 1L2, white Zarate, rare
I have these in a Picasa web album here:

Re: P&R I 50c Oil Platform
The ones mentioned here are for the plate used beginning in 1949. The variety with the V of CENTAVOS deformed is likely found more than once on the plate, judging by how common it is. The variety with the outer line upper left corner clipped is repetitive since I find more than one on the same block. This strip also shows the variety with a dot after MAR.
first stamp left to right
third stamp left to right
What makes me think that a new plate was introduced in 1949 is that the issues from that year, the 2C or Straight Rays, share plate varieties with the later issues, and the issues from 1948, on the unwatermarked opaque paper (NOP) and before do not.
Here is a 2C with the variety with the outer line upper left corner clipped
detail
Here is a variety I found several years ago as well as in the large lot I have been exmining lately. I only find it on the 1L3 from 1955, the printing with a bright yellow background.

A 50c1L5 block
This block is printed on the second Zarate paper, a thin dark paper with almost completely unreadable watermark.

Re: P&R I 50c Oil Platform
As D.A. Bardi had already published that the 50c "Pozo de Petroleo en el mar" exists in 2 different sizes although he does not mention fromn when and in which stamp we find what size....
The 1936 printings have the higher stamp size and so do probably all the subsequent printings including the "Tela" of 1941 and the 1945 No Watermark's. The 1949 Straight Rays are with the lower height and thus all the subsequent 1950-ies printings....
The new lower sized stamps should have a plate with different master-die characteristics of which the most renown is the dot below the "R".
to be continued.....

Rein,
Beautiful selection. The last item is definitely a 50c2C. I had previously conjectured, based on plate varieties, that there are two plates: first one from 1E1 to NOP in 1948, second 1949 and thereafter. Now with the size difference you find, this conjecture is easily proven to be true. Thanks!

Bella seleccion. Gracias!
saludos

Re: P&R I 50c Oil Platform
As mentione dabove, we have had a pretty advanced study of the plate characteristics so far, but as far as I know, nobody has come up with the stamps that have the 2 colour plates evidently been used in the wrong order. The back-ground in yellowish-red is most likely the colour to have been printed first, the darker red is the second colour....
The stamps displayed below show the order of the colours inverted. The paper involved is that of the 1949 [?] with coating!
