The Official stamps printed by the CSABB have 2 different paper orientations. Not easy to see if you are not used to it: direction of paper horizontal OR vertical. The sizes, however, are thanks to the contraction of the paper different and that is how to establish it:
hor. paper -> smaller height, greater width;
vert. paper -> greater height, smaller width.

Re: Two sizes of the 1901 Oficiales - papers
The extent of the contraction may differ!
The portrait may look more like an ellips than a circle....
The ellips belongs to the vertical direction of paper:

Re: Two sizes of the 1901 Oficiales - papers
Rein,
The reason why this happens is quite clear. In those times they have to moisten paper to prpoerly press the paper against
engraved plate to pick up ink from the inked intaglio plate grooves. Should I have known this before I would include it in an article being printed in our journal. I`ll send you a copy. Needless to say is that water action is "guilty" of the shinkcage, or not, of paer. I think in the wider stamps the grain is paralell to longer side of the stamp.
