Granulado versus Rayado

I have said it several times before:

the Argentineans were the first to have recognized the two categories of paper wire:

linen-binding = granulado [grené is just how neat is looks vs twill-binding = rayado

The example images given come from a book by Karl Keim, "Sieb und Filz, Günther Staib Verlag,1968.

From my own collection of paper wire from advertising material sent by the manufacturer of paper wires Martel Catala et Cie, France, 1984:

The pieces of metal weave are about 4.5cm in square...

I forgot to draw my diagonal coloured lines so now your eyes may come to grips with it!

Blue are the lines your eyes may see first, purple lines are secondary although in the rayado case they are often visible!

The field where the two types of paper mesh are very hard to recognize in Argentina stamps are those printed on Zárate paper!




We might think for a moment that the stamps are all without watermark!

But the no watermark paper of 1945-1948 had been made in Zárate!!!

And whether the Canadian paper does exist???? Who can tell!

The first stamp seems to have no structure at all, but when you look better you see a faint diagonal structure but no watermark! Zárate paper without watermark?! Some might even say it was a "trama cerrada"!





The ugly cancellation does spoil it a bit

The second stamp has a clear structure and when you look better you see a faint watermark! Zárate paper with watermark?!

The third stamp has a faint structure and no sign of a watermark! However, the paper structure is asymetrical hence this MUST be Zárate paper with watermark!!! And there is no sign of a RAYADO either!

The fourth stamp is similar to the 3rd one! It has a faint structure and no sign of a watermark! However, the paper structure is asymetrical hence this MUST be Zárate paper with watermark!!! And the paper structure is a mirror of that of the third stamp!

And there is some impression of a RAYADO - see the red lines!





Both the 3rd and 4th stamp have the extra thick a the right [top in the images] that goes with base 17 (B17)...

The fifth stamp has a clear paper structure but no watermark!! The most likely candidate for Zárate paper without watermark!!!

Five ordinary stamps that turned out to be quite different from what they looked at first sight!

And we haven't even dealt with the problem of the no watermarks with "trama cerrada" and Canadian properly ......
