Several stamps of Argentina have been printed in the Mint of Chile!!

Time to get to know a few aspects of Chile stamp printing!

At first some strange perforations that resemble what we saw in the Argentina 1c Girasol!



Comb with 32/26 teeth hor./vert. used for quite some commemoratives of Chile, but we also have plenty of stamps that are a bit narrower but with the same length! We are seeing the stamps here placed so the comb strikes from top to bottom....

We need a base line of pins plus 25 pins across to completely perforate a row of stamps...



This could be the same comb 32/26 but with 3 pins taken out to result in 32/23! But still the stroke was a bit short giving a sharp tooth at the bottom...

But when we have a closer look at the top!




We will see that 3 pins from the previous stroke more or less coincide with the stroke that has to take care of the perforation of this stamp! But not quite as you can tell by the TOO wide holes at the right...

Most of values of Argentina´s set "Pájaros Argentinos" have been printed in Chile. Because od changes of papers and designs details our Post Ofice decided to cancel the contract. Thus the current mail stamps became the set "Culturas Argentinas" printed in Argentina by Letra Viva.

The comb perforations with different strike lengths come a long way in Chile philately.

A few examples of the late 1930-ies where the comb perforated stamps do have either 20 teeth while the 20th is a lot thicker OR 21 teeth with the 21st very thin!

The horizontal perforation had 23 teeth in both cases!

It mainly concerns the definitives - either the non-airmail, the inland airmal and the international airmail! Some values even have a line perforation as the 3rd option!

The difference in the two comb perforations can be seen at the bottom of the stamps! For the left hand stamp both at the left and at the right the 20th tooth is much thicker! The right hand stamp however has a very thin 21st tooth instead!

This extra thick tooth is a very common feature for Chile stamps!

I might have thought it had something to do with the wet recess method! But then one option must have prevailed for a particular direction of paper [eje de enrollamiento] but this does not appears to be so!

All these 4 stamps belong to the 1938 non-airmail defintives and had been printed in recess!

The 5th value - 1p80 - I have seen so far only with he thick teeth at the bottom!

when were these two combs introduced??? I found the 21- comb in the commemorative of 1958 “ANTARTICA CHILENA” and later issues.
