Dutch Queen Beatrix self-adhesives born and kicking!
By 01.01.2002 the Euro would get introduced also for postage stamps in the Netherlands. But we had a half year trial period in which we would have all prices already in euro as well - next to the usual guilders! - the so-called dual currency!
By mid 2001 the first dual currency stamp was about to appear! The 85c/39c [0.85 guilders, 0.39 euro] with the portrait of queen Beatrix. These stamps were also the first Queen Beatrix to be printed by Walsall Security Printers, in Walsall UK! The designer of the Queen's head - Peter Struycken - had not been happy with the way JESSP in Haarlem had printed "his" stamps!
He was very keen on having the WSP people paying much more attention to the dots and to the colours! During the final inspection at WSP, Peter Struycken, Ferdy Sieben [Post Office official] and me were in Walsall. I saw the first trials of the 85c/39c and it never occurred to me then - it did not occur to neither of us!! - that some big mistake was made in preparing the cylinders for the Queen's head.... This was all due to the unproportional space of the value! Two dots of the head were left out of the design [it clashed with the value!] and the cylinders were prepared without these two dots!!!
The mistake was noticed by Struycken later on, but only when the first reprints had to be made in 2003, the damage got repaired!!!
So we have TWO types of the Queen's head here!
It was described by me in the Philatelie magazine, but our Stamp Dealers Association did not bother to list both types!
The NVPH is good for nothing since the mid 1990-ies. They have no idea about the technical aspects of stamp printing and they do not give a damn! In fact, the subsequent prints of their catalogues are not really worth buying anymore! Once in 5 years may suffice!

Some samples of the 85c/39c and the 1G45 as trials in the Walsall Security Printers premises to be studied by mr. Peter Struycken, the designer.

On the same day the dual currency 1G20/54c was printed:
You can see the kiss die-cut plate in action! And even the Rotometrics imprints in the margins - the firm that produced these kiss die-cut plates!

Re: Dutch Queen Beatrix self-adhesives born and kicking!
The dual currency stamp 85c/39 printed from 01.06.2001 at Walsall had two green photogravure cylinders. The "0.85" is overlapping with the portrait and there are TWO dots missing from the original portrait!
The hang and sell block of 5 has a horizontal tear line so you can tear off the top and stick with the credit card size stamp block!
Encircled are two spots that are typical for the Walsall printings! A tiny dot that is not part of the portrait design and the space where two dots were supposed to be!

Re: Dutch Queen Beatrix self-adhesives born and kicking!
From 02.01.2002 on the new inland letter rate - 39c - with the then still current Post Office logo!
Note that the position of the word Nederland in relation to the euro sign has changed slightly!
The TWO dots are still missing! Apparently mr Peter Struycken complaint has not yet reached WSP!

In 2002 the name of PTT changed into TPG [TNT Postal Group, where TNT = Thomas Nationwide Transport].
This was more or less the opportunity to fullfill Struycken's wish to repair the damage...
However, the press sheet contained the repair but something else did not fit the real stamps!

Re: Dutch Queen Beatrix self-adhesives born and kicking!
So far we have TWO types as far as the portrait goes! Do we read something about it in our catalogues???
The answer is no!!!! Who cares about 2 dots?????
But what about the next missing catalogue numbers....
The card lay-out is different! But the 0.70 stamps did get just ONE catalogue number!

Re: Dutch Queen Beatrix self-adhesives born and kicking!
Rein,
What kind of screen has been used to engrave the plate? For it is not the traditional one whith diagonal "streets" but with
90º oriented ones, something like the one used in Egypt Farouk`s stamps. Saludos,
José

this is EME (electro-mechanically engraving) - the cylinders were prepared by an outside firm - Walsall was not so keen on talking about that subject, but they said that the cylinders had been made by the Keatings firm who used Ohio Electronic Engravers machines.
You can tell the various angles used but they differ for each colour - usually it is circa 30 or 60 for magenta and cyan blue. For yellow and black circa 45 degrees. Cylinders used mainly for texts have 45 degrees and a high density, yellow has the lowest density...
Anyhow, this has nothing to do with the mosaic screen of the Nederlandsche Rotogravure Maatschappij that was used for the Egypt stamps in 1923! The Dutch word for company is "maatschappij" [and not "mastschappij" as Javier is referring to for ALPAMIJ ]
saludos, Rein
