New type of paper for Argentina stamps!

Computer scanning was bound to reveal types of papers we normally would not have found or had not been looking for....

The coarse paper wire structure known here as "Tela" was known to be used for English postage stamps around 1942. Some time ago José Merlo had mentioned to me that he had seen this type of paper wire a lot earlier for the English colonies...

I did not pay much attention to it nor did I try to scan Imperial stamps! I did notice some antique Mexican stamps that have a rather coarse paper wire but also in that case I did not scan any.

Until today, when I was scanning some early commemoratives of Argentina!

This is what I expected when scanning the 1911 D.F. Sarmiento:








quite traditional angles - for the blue diagonal lines: -57 and +57 degrees!

But I also found this:








different angles - for the blue diagonal lines: -50 and +50 degrees that go with the density of 24/22 instead of 30/20 ! Around 1941 better known as Tela!

Of my copies of the Sarmiento stamps most are "mint" that is they do have heavy hinges! This makes it difficult to scan and judge the paper structure!

Nevertheless the Tela type can be found at about 50%! At least in my small collection!

Following the diagonals from - let us say - the left upper corner - in the scanned position - towards the opposite side we land there a bit before the middle [normal] or after the middle [Tela]!

The Tela has been found in all series that had the German paper delivered by Schadd&Körtelung from Hamburg:

The 1908 JSM en ovalo set had been printed on thin paper with watermark rayos ondulados for miost values, but on paper with watermark rayos rectos [thicker paper] for the 1/2c, 1c ochre, 6c, 20c, 24c and 50c!

All these 6 values exist with Tela!!!
