How come that philatelists can spend hours on searching for catalogue numbers like Pt 124Xa or Kn 453Y without seeing what is already in their album???

I have published the different types of the 10c Rivadavia in typography here a few months ago - stamps undiscovered for decennia. Today I found out that the 5c Mariano Moreno in typography has had 2 types of which the 2nd probably showed up for the first time in 1939. It is a tiny detail in a stamp that everyone will find in their collection! Nothing rare probably!

A bit more over 7 years now that I published the Moreno that wiped off his forehead!

So far NONE of the Argentina catalogues nor handbooks bothered to enlists these two types of the 5c Moreno in typography.

Not even the most specialized of all! Catálogo Gz Tomo II Catálogo Años 1890-1953.

Gz only mentions the size of the design - 20.2x26.5 and the month of issue - April 1937 ...

Imagen

A change in size - 20.2x26.0 but NO mentioning of a change of design in between April 1937 and December 1939 !

A change of paper and watermark did occur!

Rein escribió:Some may react - what the fuzz?! - the empty forehead is THE difference between the offset-litho version and the typography version of the 5c Moreno!

They seemed to be right up to now! The only problem is that everybody might have known it, nobody had bothered to write it down and publish it let alone enlist it in any catalogue ..... A typical lethargy or tunnel vision??

It may as well be that the first version of the 5c Mariano Moreno had an empty forehead and as such had been used for the 5c offset-litho from the very start in 1935; and that the first typography version had basically the same design - bare forehead - but got changed pretty soon afterwards...

Gz only mentions the changes of paper (March 1939) and the change of the size of the design - 20.2x26.0 -> 19.8x26.0 (1941) ...

A change of paper irrespectively of the decrease of size!? Change from 20.2x26.0 to 19.8x26.0 in January 1941

Was the previous coated North American paper really coming from the States???

Or was it Dutch paper in 1939 (with the possibility of imported by an American firm] ???

So far we see mentioned 3 sizes of design:

- 20.2x26.5
- 20.2x26.0
- 19.8x26.0
