I saw your enlargements of the the typo and offset 5c San Martín and I can tell you that the laurel branches in the typos do not show fruits (or sprouts?) The offset version do show them, represented by the little circles among the leaves. In my book Sistemas de Impresión I do emntion that difference.

I did read it in your book [page 27] but I think it was about time to give an enlargement of that detail.

Pettigiani in the mean time has discovered the break in the frame [broken stairs he calls it] for the offset-litho 5c JSM!

Sergio,

the Zárate papers are awfully difficult to distinguish! But I will try. On the other hand I will need a better scan of the fronts of the stamps! The one you gave is good for nothing... :)

Rein, yeah to reduce it to a width of 900 pixels reduce the quality a lot

Here you will find a 300dpi scan. If it is not good enough I'll need to scan it again.

Thanks

Sergio,

there are 2 types in the offset-litho and 1 type in the typography versions. You need better scans 1200 or more!

saludos, Rein

P.S.

I stopped scanning below 1200 dpi! You can always enlarge the better scan on the screen and take a screen grab for the details you need! Then, eventually you can get rid of your heavy scans.....

Sergio,

re-read
The 5c José de San Martin stamps exist in both offset-litho and in typography. And as to the offset-litho according to Samuel Klass there are even subdivisions of this offset-litho a.o. the hueco-offset!

No catalogue-maker indicates that there is a basic difference in design!

In offset-litho in full:

in typography in full:

in offset-litho the fragment:

In offset-litho the details of the leaves that show nice little circles:

I don't have much time today, I'll do it tomorrow. In the meanwhile a question:

I already read this article but I had discarded because I didn't find a relationship between this and the paper. Is there a relation other than knowing what printing method was used on each paper?

Sergio,

why I am pointing this out is because in studying the watermarks you should always separate the typography printings from the offset-litho. Do not mix them!!! That goes for all stamps in the P&R I series [1c Sarmiento, 5c Moreno, 5c JSM, 10c Rivadavia, 20c Torito] and for the later JSM [20c, 40c], JSM [2p-20p]....

I got the impression from your first scan that only 3 stamps in the bottom row are offset-litho, but I could not be sure due to the low dpi!

I'll await your new scan!

Orthogonal watermark, symmetrical paper wire, direction of paper vertical, USA coated paper - density 30/16?!

Guillermo is making a great study of these Norteamericano papers! The second density may vary! I am not sure it is 16 horizontal lines per cm!
