Andres,

hoping to fully understand what you are saying, I beg to disagree!

A catalogue - be it MT or Pt or VK - is not just there to be convenient for the dealers and the buying collectors, it should serve as a Guide for all philatelists of a certain country pointing out what stamps [and variants] do exist, how to recognize them, when and where to expect them and how difficult it may be to get hold of them. A price may only be an indication of that difficulty...

The catalogue should never prescribe a collector what to collect nor to pretend that what is described in the catalogue is the complete list of what is there to collect. We can not expect a catalogue to be complete in such a description, we may expect references in it for further studies and specialisation.

An ideal catalogue should not be prepared by stamp dealers whose first obligation is to make their own enterprise profitable.... The ideal (specialized) catalogue should be prepared by independent experts of the stamps of all periods of a certain country and the task should be initiated by the National Association of Stamp Collectors!

If such a National Association does not wish to do so or think of itself as incompetent to start such a task, then it should exert as much pressure on the Stamp Dealers [Associations] to guarantee as much openness in the scope and format of the catalogues we are bound to use for our philatelic purposes. The National Association should - discovering that a certain catalogue is below standard and not adequately describing the stamps of the country - publicly state so and demand improvement.... Supposing of course that the National Association is prone to be the Defendor of the Interests of the Philatelist and that that is the sole reason of existence for that National Association....
