The 5c José de San Martin had been printed in 2 methods of printing: offset-litho and typography. As this procedure of using two methods of printing was not new - 1c Sarmiento, 5c Moreno, 10c Rivadavia, 20c Torito...
we may ask why???? What are the profits for the Postal Administration or for the Casa de Moneda de la Nacion???

No catalogue-maker indicates that there is a basic difference in design!

In Samuel Klass 1970 "Catalogio de sellos postales de la Argentina" on page 236, he uses the term "huecoooffset"in relation to the 5c Jose de San Martin of 1945.

Imagen

Googling the term I only come across a few old references - all in Spanish of course - to multicolour printing in the period of 1946-196x... Later references mention that this is the same as dry offset or laser prepared plates for offset. Of course we could not expect laser beams in 1945!!!!

Searching for "dry offset" it turns out to be typography with an intermediate cylinder like in offset.

In other words indirect typography better known by German stamp collectors as "Letterset".

http://bdph.mediagrafix.de/forum/showth ... 058&page=2

Do we have any references in the Argentina literature of this "indirect typography" or hueco-offset???

Thanks Jorge!

It confirms my thoughts about the dry offset being indirect typography in fact so we rather call it offset-typo instead of offset-litho!

The 2008 Tabla-general - and the book by Dario Bardi - contains the following:

the 5c JSM in offset-litho:

462 II sin filigrana granulado // lado mayor
462 II sin filigrana trama cerrada basico/comun
462 II sin filigrana granulado // lado menor
462 III rayado vertical - M
462 IV rayos rectos nitidos- m
462 IIIY Zarate rayado horizontal - mFT
462 IIIY Zarate rayado vertical - mFT

the 5c JSM in typography:

462 I sin filigrana granulado //lado mayor
462 I sin filigrana trama cerrada basico/comun
462 tizado rayado vertical - M
tizado tela - M
462b tizado Grueso - m

M means that the line of AЯ (renglon de AЯ) is vertical, m that it is horizontal ;)

Does anyone have an example of this stamp with watermark straight rays? I found one but with the watermark almost invisible even with bencine, will be that? or the national paper?

Cordiales saludos,
Néstor.
That solves the mystery of the Rayos rectos! But, who will show us a real National Paper?!?!

Judging by the catalogues it should be awfully common! But who has got one????

This may be the National paper, but according to Bardi the watermark should be transposed! This certainly is not! It is the first copy with this type of paper I met, so it can hardly be common!

The watermark is orthogonal, the paper mesh is asymmetrical, the direction of paper vertical and parallel to the long side of the stamp "M":

The 5c JSM in offset-litho exists in 2 types I found out . The different types of paper that go with it have to be established yet....

Type I:

Type II (since 1951?):

A quick survey of papers and types!

The unwatermarked all type I;

the asymmetrical mesh, parallel watermark both type I and type II,

the symmetrical mesh, orthogonal watermark that is barely visible [hence "national" :) ] has type II.

So if you have a stamp that seems to be without watermark and it has type II then it is national!

The 5c type I without watermark is supposed to exist on different types of paper: granulado and trama cerrada. In the last type you can not see a paper mesh at all. Nevertheless the trama cerrada has 2 types:

- paper normal
- paper transposed

Most of the unwatermarked papers of that period have the grain / mesh visible and the indents of the grain are at the front of the stamp. That is the wire side is the front and the felt side [where otherwise the watermark had been applied] is the back of the stamp. Should there have been a watermark this had been denoted by mr Bardi c.s. as watermark transposed [filigrana traspuesta] now it is just "papel traspuesto sin filigrana" ....

The "normal" trama cerrada:
