In the high resolution (600dpi) back scan, the two first stamp r2c1 and r2c2 at second row are not from this value but 35c "Palacio de Correos y Telégrafos" which only is present with RR1 paper (symmetrical) according to Bardi.
I will take some time to study your post on the other papers analysis

I think I know now why!

We made the mistake of thinking that the Rayado Vertical was issued in 1951 only!

The "brown spot" is NOT present in the Rayado Horizontal of 1951! That is right! The "slash" is but it is the only flaw! I have enough blocks of 4 [2x2] and even bigger parts to show that the "slash" is the only one......

The "brown spot" and a few other systematical flaws are only present in the late Zárate paper with symmetrical paper mesh [Pettigiani refers to the "grené" in 1956!] AND the Rayado Vertical.

My assumption is that the Rayado Vertical had TWO printings - the one in 1951 (called by Pettigiani "Mar casi liso") and the one in 1956 (probably referred to by Pettigiani as "Trama difusa" with no dates mentioned by him for the 1peso)!

In his general description of the Rayado Vertical Pettigiani refers to 3 periods: 1944 ; 1950/1951 and 1956! For the Trama Difusa he refers to several commemoratives of 1955 and 1956!

In fact, there were no commemoratives between 1950 and 1955 with Rayado Vertical (or MI5 as Bardi refers to it)!

MI5 turns up later as a companion of the Kupferschmidt paper with an orthogonal watermark in 1960!!!!! They usually come in pairs! Though not for the P&R I, for the later definitves they are referred to in the catalogues as "mate importado duro" [Wiggins Teape] or "mate importado blando" [Kupferschmidt] ..... It is obvious that Pettigiani did not bother to mention the fourth period of Rayado Vertical - 1960-1965! :)

Summing up:

We have two plates for the 1 peso with Antarctic:

- the 1951 plate with just the "slash" - RV, RH, Tizado Delgado [thin coated], Zárate Rayado
- the 1956 plate with the "brown spot" and some more flaws [yet to be displayed] - RV, Zárate Grené

to be continued ...
I promised to display the other characteristics - other than the brown spot - and I came across more than the 9 [out of 10] expected!

Having acquired quite some material of the post 1953 1p Antarctic I think we can have the following:

- Zárate asymmetrical paper wire = ZA 1 - first plate
- Zárate asymmetrical paper wire = ZA 1 - first plate Servicio Oficial 11mm
- Zárate symmetrical paper wire = ZA 2 - second plate - stage 1
- Wiggins Teape asymmetrical paper wire, paralle watermark - second plate - stage 1
- Zárate symmetrical paper wire = ZA 2 - second plate - stage 1 - Servicio Oficial 12mm
- Zárate symmetrical paper wire = ZA 2 - second plate - stage 2 - Servicio Oficial 12mm

Why two stages???

I have already explained the two different plates in my previous postings. Two stages as some of the root block characteristics are in two stages AND at first I could find only 5 of them and later on 7!

Which 5 (7) characteristics:

1. the brown spot in Venezuela
2. diagonal scratches in the first R of Republica
3. horizontal scratch at the bottom of the first N of Argentina
4. dotted scratch East of Venezuela
5. diagonal scratch in O of Peso
6. diagonal scratch at the bottom of the U of Republica
7. extra scratch in the scroll below "INA"

Starting with the Servicio Oficial 12mm!

Out of the 600 copies the following numbers:

1. 56
2. 55
3. 35
4. 46
5. 66
6. 37
7. 54

The low number of 3. may be explained by the faint print of the scratch in the N!?

The Wiggins Teape papers - 1951 and 1956 are not yet to be distinguished with certainty! Unless you have date copies of the 1951 issue!

Out of the 140 copies the following numbers:

1. 18
2. 18
3. 8
4. 5
5. 10
6. -
7. 2

Root blocks of 5x2 are v ery plausible in the case of the 1 peso Antarctic!

But what was the next step?

Making up a counter sheet of 10x10 in 10 steps and after that in one step the second counter sheet???

It would most likely give us 10 [or 20] subtypes of the individual types of the root block!

20 subtypes would us have expect - in the case of the 600 S.O 12mm - some 3 copies of each subtype being lucky...

As a matter of fact some subtypes occur quite more often! And that would lead us to conclude for 10 subtypes and an eventual further subsubtype depending on the number of counter sheets within a printing sheet ...

Leonardo,

not just the scratches are a revelation!

It also reveals a hitherto hidden aspect of the Servicio Oficial!

The 12mm offset-litho printing has a root block system that is closely connected to that of the "base stamps"!

Even more than that! There are TWO types of the 12mm Servicio Oficial!

All but one have the first "I"'s not directly underneath each other [type I] ; just ONE has the "I"'s straight on top of each other and also has a break in the "L" [type II] !!!!!!!!

Type I:
