I made a start of describing the base blocks of 5x2 for the large sized stamps - the 25c Labrador and the 50c Petroleo both their 2nd [?] plates. The 1p con limites and the other 1p stamps will be next.

http://www.galeoptix.nl//fila/arg_baseblock_25c_02.htm

http://www.galeoptix.nl//fila/arg_baseblock_50c_02.htm

The first candidate for the 1p con Antartída available in almost every type of paper - only the 1L1 ("rayado vertical" or parallel watermark with an asymmetrical paper mesh) of which I haven't that many stamps did not show up yet...

The 2 characteristics - the "/" through the border and the brown spot "*" occur too regularly! The "/" as expected about 10%!

The Zárate papers are hardly recognizable among themselves. Only the extremes are easy - the ones with a clear rhomboid vertical structure or clear horizontal lines. The watermark itself it barely there..... Can be easily mixed uo with the no watermark paper which is Zárate as well

The statistics in which I displayed the systematical flaws so far did NOT present the Rayado Vertical for the brown spot! That was strange!

Imagen

I think I know now why!

We made the mistake of thinking that the Rayado Vertical was issued in 1951 only!

The "brown spot" is NOT present in the Rayado Horizontal of 1951! That is right! The "slash" is but it is the only flaw! I have enough blocks of 4 [2x2] and even bigger parts to show that the "slash" is the only one......

The "brown spot" and a few other systematical flaws are only present in the late Zárate paper with symmetrical paper mesh [Pettigiani refers to the "grené" in 1956!] AND the Rayado Vertical.

My assumption is that the Rayado Vertical had TWO printings - the one in 1951 (called by Pettigiani "Mar casi liso") and the one in 1956 (probably referred to by Pettigiani as "Trama difusa" with no dates mentioned by him for the 1peso)!

In his general description of the Rayado Vertical Pettigiani refers to 3 periods: 1944 ; 1950/1951 and 1956! For the Trama Difusa he refers to several commemoratives of 1955 and 1956!

In fact, there were no commemoratives between 1950 and 1955 with Rayado Vertical (or MI5 as Bardi refers to it)!

MI5 turns up later as a companion of the Kupferschmidt paper with an orthogonal watermark in 1960!!!!! They usually come in pairs! Though not for the P&R I, for the later definitves they are referred to in the catalogues as "mate importado duro" [Wiggins Teape] or "mate importado blando" [Kupferschmidt] ..... It is obvious that Pettigiani did not bother to mention the fourth period of Rayado Vertical - 1960-1965! :)

Summing up:

We have two plates for the 1 peso with Antarctic:

- the 1951 plate with just the "slash" - RV, RH, Tizado Delgado [thin coated], Zárate Rayado
- the 1956 plate with the "brown spot" and some more flaws [yet to be displayed] - RV, Zárate Grené

to be continued ...

According to Bardi's there this stamps is only on papers I've never work with ie: MI5, MI6, TI6, ZA1, ZA2

r1c4 looks like Parallel watermark, asymmetrical paper mesh but not sure what kind of ZA is.

Rein can you help me with this?

If needed here there is a high definition jpg from the back.

Sergio,

Imagen

The top row is all Zárate, small sun in a orthogonal watermark, i.e. the line of AЯ is perpendicular to the direction of paper - yellow suns and black arrow - with either asymmetrical paper wire [no 1 and 3] or symmetrical [no 2, 4 and 5],

The bottom row is Zárate too, the small sized stamps with a symmetrical paper wire, the 3rd one asymmetrical!

The drawing in Paint of the middle stamp got wrong somehow, I will correct this!

Saludos, Rein
