I shall leave the 10c Rivadavia for the moment as there is the complication with the various types Pettigiani recognizes!

And so far it should be clear from the pictures that the JB - or the USA 1943 stamp paper has nothing to do with the asymmetrical types - even though we can have very clear horizontal lines!!!!! And that is easily to be confused with the JC to be discussed later on....

Leopoldo Tenorio Casal


Finding relevant information, publications on the Argentine postage stamps is extremely difficult for someone who is not living there!

Being there and most likely having access to the philatelic libraries, some publications however not always quite agreeable with what you have in mind should be at least mentioned and contradicted if necessary. Just ignoring as was the case with Dario bardi publications is not fair.

Reading the 1947 article of Leopoldo Tenorio Casal, we find a reference to a first production of coated paper for the 5c Moreno and the 10c Rivadavia of 1939; a 3rd production however for the 1943 printing on coated paper for the 1c DF Sarmiento, the 5c Moreno and the 10c Rivadavia.

1c, third production:

25.05.1943 10 1.2mm, 30.8 x 17.omm



5c, 1st and 3rd production:

05.04.1939 10mm, 29.7 x 16.8mm



06.09.1943 10 1/2mm, 30.8 x 17.0mm




10c, 1st and 3rd production:

04.11.1939 10mm, 29.7 x 16.8mm
20.06.1943 10 1/2mm, 30.8 x 17.0mm




Where is the 2nd production!??? Where are the 1941 based examples of JC???

We find the following commemoratives having coated paper in the 1939-1943 period:

1939 01.04 XIth UPU Congress with an orthogonal watermark, symmetrical paper mesh, coating and/or varnish, in photogravure

but this is even before the 1st production of the 5c!

Furthermore:

1941 19.10 Julio A. Roca with an orthogonal watermark, symmetrical paper mesh, coating and/or varnish, in photogravure

This will be our second production!

JC - Rayado Horizontal

In two parts:

1941 for the 1c Sarmiento and 5c Moreno

and in

1950 for the 10c Rivadavia and 20c Torito

As I stated in my previous posting there was no 1941 printing order - believing Tenorio Casal of course - and if there was it would be great to have the Casa de Moneda evidence

Taking as Pettigiani does the 20c Torito as our crown witness I will provide some scans soon!

K - Rayado vertical of English origin, a parallel watermark with an asymmetrical paper mesh! And coated of course! Assigned watermark type I so it must be like the uncoated version "F".

First use in 1949 although the reference for commemorative stamps suggest differently:

MT 493 = 24.12.1947 20c Cruzada Escolar in photogravurwe
MT 494 = 21.05.1948 Dia Americana del Indio in photogravure
MT 495 = 18.07.1948 5 years after the June Revolution in photogravure
MT 501 = 20.06.1949 National Constitution in recess

The 12.10.1947 400 year Cervantes stamps have both K and JC! Cervantes with both the parallel and the orthogonal watermarks!! All having an asymmetrical paper mesh... All in photogravure!

L = Tela, of English origin, the parallel watermark with an asymmetrical paper mesh and coated. But above all with a density of 24/20 instead of 30/20!

Introduced in 1949. Reference for the commemoratives:

When the "rayado vertical" is denoted by Pettigiani by "K"and the "Tela" by "L, the difference is barely visible unless one uses sophisticated methods. The rayado vertical shows asymmetrical diagonals - hence has a asymmetrical paper mesh, the Tela has a symmetrical paper mesh!

M = the thinner paper - the delgado - that hardly anyone imagined to be coated so the term 'satinado" was coined... Of English origin, like all the other papers coming from the Wiggins, Teape etc. group.

Pettigiani says it got introduced in 1952 and staid in use till 1955. There are plenty of references for it in the commemoratives, the book mentions block 10 - 12.10.1956 Centenario del Sello Postal Argentino, but there were several other stamps both before and after!

Guillermo Jalil uses the term "Satinado importado" consequently since the 1952 Evita 45c stamp printed in recess on the Giori press. And "Tizado importado" for the K paper.

Early examples are the 17.11.1951 5 Year Plan and the 14.12.1951 Human Rights, all in photogravure.

During the period 1957-1960 both K and M had been used next to each other - even for one particular stamp! - whereas M stays till 1963.....
