Re: Irish birds definitives - 1997-2003
The 30p Birds were issued in May 1998 and have also supposedly gauge 11 1/2.... http://www.galeoptix.nl/fila/eire/thumbs/eire_1997_30p_sharp_blunt_00.jpg The first column has no phosphorescence, in the second and third column the difference is in the "kiss die-cuts"! http://www.galeoptix.n...

The Australian products have a "kiss die cut" with 13/16 teeth in various shapes and according to Hibernian with various gauges! The earliest one - the 32p Heritage issued in 1990 has "sharp" teeth and a supposed gauge of 11 1/4! http://www.galeoptix.nl/fila/eire/thumbs/eire_1990...

Irish birds definitives - 1997-2003
The Irish birds series is quite complicated because of the various changes in valuta: LSD [pounds, pennies] - dual - euro [cents]. And because of the various printers involved in their self-adhesive stamps. The Hibernian 2014 catalogue does list them like this: http://www.galeoptix.nl/fila/eire/thum...

peterh Post subject: Re: Blind spots in Irish philately - watermarks PostPosted: Sat Sep 29, 2018 12:44:25 pm Rein - your scan of the SG listing is very very old! The statement in the current catalogue is the same about the dandy rolls. The inverted watermarks are all now listed in SG. Chalky paper...

Re: Blind spots in Irish philately
As to the colour of the papers, Murray Payne mentions the "cream paper" for just the "e" watermark. But the 6d is always different!!! Not as far as the front of the stamp but for the back! http://www.galeoptix.nl/fila/eire/thumbs/eire_1922_mint_50.jpg http://www.galeoptix.nl/fila...

Re: Blind spots in Irish philately
Also later on - the "e" watermark - we can observe differences WITHIN a single stamp:

Re: Blind spots in Irish philately
http://www.stampboards.com/images/galeoptix/fila/eire/thumbs/eire_sg_wmk_rubbish.jpg How can a respectable firm such as Stanley Gibbons claim such rubbish???? Different dandy rolls? OK, but just two? Shrinkage, pressure and machine speed? Why not in the 1922-1940 period with likely lower comfortabl...

Re: Blind spots in Irish philately
The second stamp shows very clearly the twill binding of the sieve of ther papermachine! Twill bindings are asymmetrical - the steepest of the diagonals goes downwards [judging from left to right] http://www.galeoptix.nl/fila/eire/thumbs/eire_1940_2d_IVd_02.jpg http://www.galeoptix.nl/fila/eire/thum...

Re: Blind spots in Irish philately
In these series the discussion of what is chalky paper is avoided! Stanley Gibbons "locuta est" that only coated papers that react to the "chalk test" is chalky! Recently it has been proven that chalk it self had nothing to do with it, but it is the presence or absence of caseine...

Re: Blind spots in Irish philately
There is no mention of different types of paper in other publications! Murray Payne lists them as follows: http://www.galeoptix.nl/fila/eire/thumbs/eire_1922_definitives_mp_01.jpg http://www.galeoptix.nl/fila/eire/thumbs/eire_1937_st_patrick_mp_01.jpg http://www.galeoptix.nl/fila/eire/thumbs/eire_19...
